Do You Know the Meaning of Numbers of Your Eyeglass?

If you look very closely, you might see 3 numbers printed on the prescription of your eyeglasses.

Usually, these numbers will appear on the inner surface of one of your frame temples which is long stems of frames which hold your glasses right in place just behind your ears.

Generally, these numbers will indicate the size of frames of your eyeglass, particularly the following:

  • Your eye size
  • The bridge size which is actually the distance between both the lenses
  • Your temple length

All the above 3 of these measurements will be specified in the unit of millimeters (mm).

Let us say after your visit to an optometrist near me you find 3 numbers written inside the frames as 48-19-140.

The very first number as mentioned above will indicate your eye size which also represents horizontal width of your lenses. In the above case, the opening of the frame for your lenses is having width of 48 mm.

Usually, the eye size of most eyeglass frames will range from 40 mm – 62 mm.

The next number represents the bridge size which is distance between two lenses. In fact, in other words, it is your “bridge” size of the frame which rests on the nose. In this particular case, your frame bridge will be 19 mm wide.

However, in most of the cases, bridge size of the eyeglass frames will range from 14 mm – 24 mm.

Now the third number is the temple length which is the “stem” length of the frame that is measured from frame hinge to back tip of your temple. In the present case, your temple length will be 140 mm. Generally, temple lengths will be ranging from 120 mm – 150 mm.

Often Small Square instead of a dash may separate your eye size and also your bridge size on your frame.

Also, in addition to eye size, temple length and bridge size, you may see many other letters or numbers or names that are stamped on inside of your frame. These will usually designate your frame model and the color of your frame.
